The debate on whether to continue or discontinue the National Youth Service Corp NYSC has been on for sometime, yet no decisions have been reached.

On Monday, 24th October, Mr. Shehu Sani, a lawmaker representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, made a call to the Federal Government urging them to either provide life insurance for Youth Corp Members or make it a voluntary scheme.

The Senator was embittered by the death of a 26 years old Youth Corp member from his constituency, Lawal Kontagora, who was shot dead in kaduna on the 17th of October, 2016.

The deceased is said to be a graduate of a Malaysian University. He was in his car which was stationed somewhere at Gambia road junction, Malali Low Cost Housing Estate, Kaduna, with his girlfriend on the fateful day.

Mr. Sani grieved with the bereaved’s family, and stated that, “When a state has reached a point that it cannot provide and it cannot protect, then question could be raised of the essence of government and governance.”

He further stated “The fact that we failed to protect the young man from thugs and murderers clearly shows how vulnerable the whole society is.”

The state police command spokesperson, Mr. Aliyu Usman said two suspects, Jamilu Lado, 22, and Sarki, 22, has been arrested. Another accomplice is still at large. The duo were arrested when they had a disagreement over the sharing method of the handsets and money that they recovered from their victim.

Senator Sani stated that the government must take responsibility for the death, as it failed to protect. He promised to raise the issue at the senate.
