Disney’s The Lion King continues its reign at the box office, surpassing The Avengers to become the seventh highest-grossing movie of all time.
According to Box Office Mojo, the live-action remake of the 1994 classic currently sits at $1,564.5 billion — $523.5 million domestic and $1,041 million international — jumping ahead of The Avengers’ $1,518.8 billion.
Ahead of The Lion King sits Jurassic World
This is likely as far as The Lion King will go. The film is nearing the end of its theatrical run, so the odds of it making another hundred million to pass Jurassic World are low.
This milestone is the latest on a long list of achievements for Disney. The House of Mouse currently occupies six of the top 10 spots on the highest-grossing movie list and nine of the top 15 spots. While Disney now owns the rights to Fox’s Avatar, they did not distribute that film at the time of its release.
Directed by Jon Favreau, The Lion King features the voices of Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, John Kani, John Oliver, Florence Kasumba, Eric André, Keegan-Michael Key, JD McCrary, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and James Earl Jones. It is currently in theatres.
