Messi was back to his magestrial best after a stuttering start to the season. Barcelona’s 10 had been nursing an ankle injury since towards the end of last season.
Messi struck twice last night against Real Valladolid including a landmark 50th career free-kick (20th in the last 5 seasons), and provided assists for Arturo Vidal and Luis Suarez as Barcelona returned to the top of La Liga with a seventh straight win in all competitions.
Barcelona’s form without their talisman was worrying, in their opening 5 matches they picked up only 2 wins ( LWDWDL) however since Messi’s first start of the season they have gone on to win 7 games on the trot and are back on top of La Liga, (WWWWWWW).
Other than going top of La Liga and scoring his 50th free kick, it was a special occasion for Leo for another reason. Last night saw him overtake great rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the number of league goals scored. Messi has now scored 608 league goals, compared to Ronaldo’s 606, however Messi has achieved this number in 118 fewer games. Some achievement.
Here is the current state of affairs in La Liga.
