Ms Marvel is set to become the first Muslim superhero to come to cinema screens, sometime after Captain Marvel releases in 2019, Marvel president Kevin Feige has revealed.
Feige said: “We’re doing Captain Marvel right now, that’s shooting now. Ms Marvel, the Muslim hero who is inspired by Captain Marvel is definitely sort of in the works. We have plans for that once we’ve introduced Captain Marvel to the world.”
Ms Marvel, aka Pakistani-American teenager Kamala Khan, made her first appearance in Marvel comic books in an August 2013 edition of Captain Marvel, and landed her own series of comics in February 2014.
She took on the former identity of her hero Carol Danvers, who dropped the Ms Marvel moniker in the Marvel comics when she took on the mantle of Captain Marvel in 2012. Ms Marvel was the comic giant’s first Muslim lead character, and now looks set to repeat that achievement in cinemas.
As of now, no firm plans have been announced yet – least of all casting – but there’s speculation that Priyanka Chopra could be the lead for the role.
The actress already voices the character in the mobile video game Marvel: Avengers Academy.
