Nigerian model Mayowa Nicholas is on a trajectory for the very top. Last year, she walked the Victoria’s Secret fashion show and has quickly risen to be an Oscar de la renta favorite having walked every season for the brand’s shows and featured in its campaigns.
She was recently tapped alongside Danish model Marte Mei van Haaster to showcase the brands ODLR’s resort 2020 collection.
For this collection, Oscar De La Renta draws inspiration from ancient Japanese culture; the Wabi-Sabi culture which dates back to the early 18th century when the country was under the rule of great Emperor Metshuto. The culture teaches the art of transcience, of imperfection and of acceptance. To perceive the beautiful objects of art in their nature, genuine and without excesses.
This was epitomized in the strict lines of trouser suits, the strapless and floral corset evening dresses the collection boasts of.
The collection also channels Japan’s introduction to Western culture as it features meticulous gold chains decorating waistlines and khaki pants nostalgic of military apparel of the late 18th century.
