People search for happiness all over the world, sometimes for years, but don’t always find it. We always search for happiness in physical things, not knowing that happiness lies within us. No one can give you the best form of happiness you desire other than the one that comes from within you.

Too many people believe that money has everything to do with this: the richer you are, the happier you must be. However, many of us have come to realize that even the rich can be dissatisfied with their fortune. This is enough to make us all wonder about what happiness is, where we find it, and how we sustain it in our lives.

Here are simple tips on how to be a happier person, regardless of the circumstances around you.

  1. Gratitude

You may have heard time and again that gratitude is one of the best ways to be happy. Yet, when you really do give into gratitude and truly count your blessings, however small they may be you will certainly notice the change in how you feel. Your anger and distress might make you think that you’re the most unfortunate person, but reminding yourself that you are alive and breathing can be enough to push your thoughts towards positivity. Gratitude, after all, is called the mother of all virtues, and inculcating it into our life can give us a powerful weapon against negative thoughts.

  1. The Small Things

When you ask an unhappy person about what can make them happy, he might say that the next promotion or the next pay hike could finally take him there. All of us wait for the big things: a better job, a happy relationship, a strong marriage to make us as happy as the movies show us. However, by appreciating the mundane, everyday things and enjoying them, we make more room to be happy. A great conversation with an old friend, for example, can be a great source of joy.

  1. Altruism

Giving our time to help those in need is one of the most fulfilling things we can do. There are people all around us reaching out for help, and we can make a great impact when we reach out to them. Activities like volunteering have shown to have a significant impact on our mental well-being because we understand that our place in this life can have some purpose. When we go out of our way to help other people, not only do we help them to overcome any difficulties, but we also learn from them and become better people in the process.

  1. Positivity

One of the greatest killers of happiness is being surrounded by negativity. This could be negative people, negative groups and negative events among others. Cutting negative people out of our life can be one of the biggest pushes towards a healthier mind. The rest, such as negative writing and negative thoughts will automatically leave us once we are rid of the root of it all. Making an effort to surround yourself with people who are positive and beaming can be the difference between happiness and unhappiness.

  1. Acceptance

Acceptance seems like one of the most difficult things to do, but it really isn’t as bad as it is made out to be. People may feel that acceptance means to give up, or to lose, but sometimes, you cannot change the situation around you. Knowing when to accept and when to keep going can be difficult, but if we haven’t mastered the art of letting go, we will never find peace. Accepting a person, situation or an event for what it is shows us a path to move away from it and make room for better things to come to us.
