A new TV show exploring the origins of Batman has been announced. The 10-episode series, titled Pennyworth, will premiere on the MGM-owned network, Epix.
According to reports, the show will focus on Bruce Wayne’s butler and bezzie Alfred Pennyworth. It’s noted that the series won’t be a Gotham spinoff, but a completely new story looking into Pennyworth’s past. It will detail his origins as a former SAS soldier before he forms a company and goes to work with Batman’s billionaire father, Thoman Wayne.
The show will take place in a completely new universe, despite being penned and executive produced by Gotham showrunner, Bruno Heller.
Epix president Michael Wright: “As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series. We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny — along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon — on this fantastic origin story.”
In a joint statement, Heller and Cannon say: “Michael and his colleagues have created the perfect venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on Pennyworth are thrilled to be on the Epix slate.”
