Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro who was a former Minister of State for Defence has returned to the country, stating that he is back to clear himself.

The former minister, who no longer holds a ministerial position, went on exile to the  U.S. after his political party lost the election in 2015, to avert been prosecuted by the EFCC for charges bordering on financial crimes hanging on his neck.

Obanikoro who had earlier sworn not to return to the country for reasons of being victimized by the current government by way of prosecution has been in the custody of the EFCC since his arrival at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja and has not been released as at 5:46 pm on Monday.

Mr. Obanikoro has been alleged to have used the names of his sons; Gbolahan and Jide, to secure government contracts worth about N4.7M that were never executed. He is also accused of being involved in Ekiti elections scandal.

Premium Times reports that, in a telephone interview, the lead counsel of Mr. Obanikoro’s legal representatives, James Onoja (SAN), had informed them on Monday night that, Mr. Obanikoro will be spending the night in EFCC custody today (being Monday).

The counsel stated that his client has written a statement and will hopefully be released on Tuesday, and anything short of his release will spark necessary actions to enforce the rule of law.

The EFCC spokesperson, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren who said he had been away from the office for hours, could not speak on the matter as on Monday night when he was contacted.
