Remember the good old days when musicals were a hit and made you look forward to listening to the songs more than watching the actual movie itself? Some of the fond memories of old musical movies we watched as kids have journeyed through our adult years with us. For today’s Throwback Thursday, let’s take a look at some of the greatest musicals of all time:
Kids these days will never know that the popular movie Annie is actually a remake and had first made it rounds as far back as 1982. This movie was so successful that a sequel called Annie: The Royal Adventure was released in 1995 and another “made for television remake” released in 1999 (they weren’t sweet-stick to the original).
SOUND OF MUSIC
If you haven’t watched this movie then you’ve clearly been living under a rock (totally not kidding). This movie is one of the oldest musical movies there is and was (and still is) a HUGE success. Years later and the songs from the movie have continued to enjoy popularity. Can I hear you humming to do-re-mi already?
This musical Disney movie is based on a book series which and combines live-action and animation. Mary Poppins, the protagonist of the movie, is a magical nanny who proves that with music and love, everything can be perfect! It also made us down whole spoons full of sugar (spoiler- it does NOT help the medicine go down)
BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS
This movie has been frequently compared to Mary Poppins based on their similarity in fantasy, animation and live action. This movie showcases the adventures of three children who dabble in the world of magic and flying brooms.
This animated movie from Disney captured many hearts with its songs, its plot and its Hakuna Matata. Lion King is the highest-grossing release of 1994 and the second highest-grossing film of all time. The Lion King also garnered two Academy Awards for its achievement in music and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture.
