Earlier in the week, #AMAANominations2019 came through and King Of Boys which was directed by Kemi Adetiba and released on Netflix on the 20th of September, was nominated in 8 categories, which include; Best Film, Best Director, Best achievement in visual effect, Best Nigerian Film, Best actor in supporting role, Best actress in supporting role and most definitely, Best Leading Actress.
The KOB’s stanners came out enmasse to congratulate Kemi Adetiba and her entire team on the achievement, while wishing her (Kemi) tons of love and luck.
However, I wasn’t excited about Toni Tones not getting recognised for her stellar performance as the “junior Oba”, and the absence of an award for the use of Location.
Our Nigerian filmmakers went over and beyond this season, especially with movies like Up North and KOB and I would have loved if they were recognised and spurred to do better.
I tweeted my grievance though and got a subtle response from them – glad they paid attention.
My absolute favourite character, Alhaji Sarafu aka Reminisce aka Oba Alaga aka Baba Hafusa aka Makanaki got the well deserved nomination for the Best actor in a supporting role and his goons weren’t playing.
I commented this on his acknowledgement thread:
“Makanaki This is a legit win, elssssssseeeeeeeeeeee. They shouldn’t even try us”.
Then the retweets 🤣🤣, gosh I teared anytime my notification beeped.
From “iyalaya anybody” to “wo oni fe te” to “je kan mo” to my fave “egbon fun wa ni coordinates, tin won ba sori buruku, won ma mo”.
People are wilding!
Rgardless of the tweets which may not hold water and influence the result, I’m super excited at the nomination for Reminisce. He brought his A-game, totally slayed his lines and I’m glad it got recognised.
I am super excited for the KOB team, they did the impossible, creating a never-before-achieved three-hour stellar movie that kept us on our feet. Rumours are rife of a Part two coming out soon, and we are waiting with bated breathe.
