Yesterday evening, I lost a bet with bae and I now owe him N80k. Also yesterday, a lady in China got a divorce and got ONE BILLION DOLLARS. Please, how is this life fair!?
The divorce settlement between Zhou Yahui and Li Qiong, under a civil mediation agreement issued by a Beijing court dictates that Zhou will hand over 278 million shares of their online gaming firm Beijing Kunlun Tech to his ex-wife Li Qiong. The company’s stock in Shenzhen closed Wednesday at 26.44 yuan, putting the value of the settlement at 7.35 billion yuan ($1.1 billion).
The couple were ranked 11th in a global list of self-made billionaires under 40 earlier in the year in a list compiled by the Hurun Report, their combined wealth was estimated at $3.5 billion.
The huge settlement is one of the costliest splits in China’s history and is currently making huge headlines in Chinese state media. Another thing making headlines- the divorce rate in China increasing to 3.9% in 2015. 3.63 million couples bringing their marriage to an end, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs. The rate has been rising for twelve consecutive years since 2003. “Have you divorced today?” (今天你离了吗) has recently become a common joke between Chinese people.
The divorce settlement tops the estimated $1 billion paid by Formula One Group CEO Bernie Ecclestone in 2009, $975 million paid by U.S. oil tycoon Harold Hamm in 2012 but will be less than the estimated $850 million in today’s value paid by Adnan Khashoggi to his ex-wife in 1980. Zhou Yahui will remain the largest shareholder of Beijing Kunlun Tech.
