Oscar in the City- Pick Your Self Up, Damn It!
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”
A famous children’s rhyme that persuades a child victim of name calling to refrain from physical retaliation, remain clam and good natured. Recorded as far back as 1862 from a publication of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
The reverse was the case for me- 75 words changed my day. 75 words from a friend who usually does not comment much about anyone or anything! I dedicate this article to him.
Whether in recession or not, we all hit rock bottom emotionally, financially and all the…”ally” there can be! At the center of this storm, there is a calm called “Happiness”. Let me share some steps (inspired by a clip I watched) on how to get that calm in the middle back…and own it!
Numero Uno! Own Your Happiness
Other people can’t make you happy the way you can. Acts of kindness or feelings of happiness should not be mistaken for true happiness…or put it this way, when the source of this “happy feeling” is absent, what happens to you? How do you feel? I am talking about having that glow inside you no mater the situation.
Demanding or expecting happiness from your partner, friend, colleague, children, a big fat bank account (yet to experience this though so cant judge lol) is a smoke screen, only YOU can take responsibility for that joy or peace that lives inside of you, cant get it inside of other stuff or people!
Back to my 75 words…I was in a mess like most of us, bills, debtors calling non stop etc. and this message pops up (read below)
I melted, not because of the comment per say…but the fact that I had gotten lost in the storm of “the hustle” and forgotten a part of me that made me…me!
NOTE TO SELF (NTS): Send 5 messages or Perform 5 acts of kindness to people in your circle for no reason!
It happens to us all, and sometimes its takes a random act of kindness to remind us what is important. To remember the calm in the eye of the storm and be happy with ourselves
Numero #2 Enjoy the Journey NOT the destination
I mentioned in my introductory article (Click here to read) that “No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path”
This path, more often than not, is uncertain and unpredictable like sh#@! We get so fixated on the destination (build my house, get married by Xyrs, get a Phd, buy this, buy that blah blah) that we miss out on the journey. Nothing wrong with these achievements but paying attention to the journey is so much more fun. Don’t delay your happiness till you reach a “destination”, soak it all up along the way
When I look back, I don’t think I would change anything, most of my best lessons learnt are from just soaking up the experiences. Sometimes I hit the bulls eye, most times I didn’t.
My kid just gave me puppy eyes for some daddy – daughter time. Lol, #justcantsayno
Lets finish this up in my next write up…at least you have something to go on for now. *fistbump* #pickurselfupdamnit
