The exit of Enoch Adeboye as the Nigerian overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God has recently caused waves amongst his numerous followers.
The resignation of the Redeem Christian Church of God’s General Overseer who is arguably Nigeria’s most influential Christian cleric, was in compliance with the suspended FRC governance code for non-profitmaking organisations, including civil societies and religious organisations. But it seems that people are massively unhappy about the turn of events as it has been reported to be suspended by the Nigerian government.
This development occurred after President Muhammadu Buhari sacked the Executive Secretary of FRC, Jim Obazee. It is reported that the Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechuckwu Enelamah, disclosed the suspension in a statement. The said governance code had sought to provide financial reporting, transparency and accountability standards for not-for-profit organizations.
It also provided that founders or leaders of not-for-profit organizations would not head governance of their organisations for more than 20 years, and could not also pass baton to their family members.
There have been opinions and reactions from several persons since the enactment of the said code as some believed it was deliberately targeting faith organisations, especially the Church. Pastor Adeboye had on Saturday complained about the government’s interest in Church activities.
In the statement that was released, the minister said the code stood suspended pending its review and consultation with stakeholders.
