Egusi soup is one of the most popular soups among the Yorubas, which is made from melon seeds. It can be prepared with vegetables such as Ugwu or bitter leaf. It is quite easy to prepare. Follow these steps to make it at home:


Egusi seed


Stock fish pieces

Ground dried crayfish

Ugwu or bitter leaves

Palm oil


Fresh tomatoes

Ground chilli powder


Cut the beef into small cubes, season with one chopped onion and add seasoning. Add half a cup of water and boil for about 10 minutes or until tender. Set aside.

Mix the ground egusi in half a cup of water. Set aside. Blend the tomatoes, the onion and the chilli. Set aside.

Heat the palm oil in another pot and add the Egusi mixture. Stir well and allow it to fry for a moment. Add the blended items and stir well. Then Add the ground crayfish and stock fish.

Add water and allow to cook for five minutes. Add the boiled meat and stir. Reduce the heat down and simmer for a further two minutes.

Wash and slice the Ugwu or bitter leaves. Add to the simmering soup and stir. Continue to simmer for another five minutes to allow the vegetables to soften.

You can serve with any swallow of your choice.
