The just concluded annual CFDA Awards wasn’t exactly short of Fashion best and brightest.

From the man behind Balenciaga and Vetements, Demna Gvasalia, to make-up extraordinaire and legend, Pat McGrath, the Manhattan Centre’s Hammerstein ballroom was packed to the brim and ready to honour the industry’s most outstanding talents.

Winner’s included Coach’s Stuart Vevers (Accessory Design of the Year Award), journalist Gloria Steinem (Board of Director’s Tribute Award) and the late Franca sozzani, who was honoured with the Fashion Icon Award, presented by Vogue US editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, to Sozzani’s son (and Wintour’s future son-in-law) Francesco Carrozzini.

But amongst these achievements, it was Calvin Klein’s Chief Creative Officer, Raf Simons, who stole the show, by picking up both the awards for Menswear Designer of The year and Womenswear Designer of the year.

Having risen to the helm of the American design house in August of last year, the 49-year-old Belgian designer has continued to gain praise for his vision of the brand, after showing his debut collection at New York Fashion week in February.

Previously at Dior and Jil Sander has commanded much attention after redesigning Calvin Klein’s iconic logo, offering a bespoke line of 14 made-to-order styles, and by combining fashion and activism – ‘fashtivism’ – to critique America’s ongoing struggle with its identity and the American Dream.

The event was took place in Manhattan, Raf not only graced the stage twice, but also became the first person to collect two awards at the previous ceremony since Calvin Klein received the accolade in 1993.

Some people may argue that the connection between the brand’s founder and current CCO is simply ironic, but we believe it’s affirmation of Simons’ perfect fit for the brand.
