The UEFA Champions league winners Real Madrid squared up against the EUROPA League winners Manchester United in what looked like ‘a match of the titans’.

Jose Mourinho put up a defensive-like lineup to counter the Madridistas offenses with new signing Matic making up the defensive midfield trio which also included Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera while Zinedine Zidane put up a similar line up to the one used in the final against Juventus.

Real Madrid started the game on the front foot with Casemiro opening the scoring as Madrid ending the first half with a possession of 63%.Mourinho’s response was to swap Marcus Rashford for Lingard at half-time, but it didn’t have the desired effect as Toni Kroos forced De Gea into a good save and Marcelo went close after an error from Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

In the second half, the combination of Bale,Benzema and Isco produced a moment of magic when the Spaniard was played in by Bale to make it 2-0 after 52 minutes.

Romelu Lukaku should have got one back immediately afterwards but blazed his shot over the crossbar. However, he was given a second chance as Navas presented United’s new £75 million striker with a similar chance moments later, and this time he found the net to make it 2-1. It came moments after Bale had hit the bar to almost make it 3-0.

This is Zidane second successive Super Cup title and his 7th title since taking charge of Madrid while it is more Super Cup woes for Mourinho as he has failed to lift any.

Who knows—maybe that is why he gave away his medal. Slide through the gallery above the page for more photos.
