On this day 25th of April 2002, Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopez, American Hip-Hop singer, rapper, songwriter, and producer and one-third of the R&B girl group TLC died. Here are some essential Left Eye songs/verses:

Left Eye’ Lopez

This one here was the first anti-f boy anthem, one time for female empowerment. Boys were scared to sit on the passenger side of a car. The song was produced by She’kspere”. Left Eye took the last verse, although the last verse was not included on the album version of the song, she rapped on the video version. FUN FACT: Ed Sheeran had to add the writers of TLC’s No Scrubs to the credits because the song’s pre-chorus (“Boy, let’s not talk too much/ Grab on my waist and put that body on me”) started to receive comparisons to the ’90s R&B classic for its similar lyrical rhythm (“No, I don’t want no scrubs/ A scrub is a guy that can’t get no love from me”)

The Grammy-nominated 1995 single, Waterfalls by TLC from their second album CrazySexyCool was a smash hit.  Don’t lie, for a long time you were singing ‘don’t go Jason Waterfalls’ before you knew the proper lyrics.

Left Eye was the only member of the group that received writing credit on this song. Billboard named the song number 10 on their list of 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time.

“From the sophomore album CrazySexyCool with that signature 90’s sound was Creep, TLC’s first single. It was the female group’s first number 1 hit and they won a Grammy in 1996 for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Left Eye was against this song being released. She felt it was bad advice to tell fans to cheat back when cheated on instead of encouraging them to leave. She went as far as threatening to wear a black tape over her mouth in the video in protest, but instead settled on a verse in the song’s Darp remix about the dangers of cheating.

From the 1999 album Fanmail, TLC’s third studio album. This song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and was number 1 for 3 weeks. Unpretty focuses on how a lot of women don’t feel beautiful enough because of men wanting them to wear makeup, hair extensions, have plastic surgery. If this song still isn’t relevant currently in this age of Instagram models, I don’t know what song is.

Singer and songwriter Donell Jones’ 1999, hit U Know What’s Up featured Left Eye. ‘Better holla if ya hear me cause Left Eye gon’ shine’. And shine she did on her rap verse. The song went on to become Donell Jones biggest hit of his career reaching the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart and staying at number one for eight weeks
