Bayern Munich maestro Arjen Robben has announced his retirement from international football after his side missed out on a place at next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

The Dutch captain scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Sweden- one a dinked penalty and the other a 20-yard shot, but they were not enough to qualify them for the play-offs as they needed seven goals to move above their opponents.

“It hasn’t been an easy decision but I am 33 and now must give my full focus to my club,” he said.

The 33-year old who made his debut in April 2003, has scored 37 times in his 96 appearances.

He is joint fourth on the Netherlands’ all-time goal scorer list, level with former Arsenal forward Dennis Bergkamp.
