Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has dropped Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho from his 23-man squad for this month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2019) qualifier against the Pirates of Seychelles and the friendly against Egypt’s Pharaohs, both in Asaba, Delta State.
The German tactician unexpectedly invited 24-year-old FC Midtjylland striker, a first invitation to the national team.
Rohr also named Flying Eagles’ defender Valentine Ozornwafor (Enyimba) and U-17 World Cup winner, Victor Osimhen, in his squad for both matches, but left out Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze, who had a fine debut against Uganda last year in Asaba.
Leganes defender Kenneth Omeruo was included in the squad alongside other regulars Leon Balogun, Abdullahi Shehu and William Troost-Ekong, as well as midfielders Oghenekaro Etebo and Wilfred Ndidi and forwards Odion Ighalo, Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon.
It was confirmed that all invited players, alongside the technical and backroom crew, are to report in the Delta State capital on March 18.
The three-time African champions, who have qualified for the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, would take on Seychelles at the Stephen Keshi Stadium on March 22, and then trade tackles with the Pharaohs of Egypt at the same venue in an international friendly four days later.
