The Court of Arbitration for Sport has rejected the last-minute appeals of 47 Russian athletes and coaches to be allowed entry into the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The appellants had asked CAS to overturn a decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) not to invite them over doping concerns, meaning they won’t be joining the 150 competitors cleared to compete as “Olympic Athletes from Russia” (OAR).
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko said the decision was understandable but disappointing.
Meanwhile, the IOC welcomed the decision which supports the fight against doping and brings clarity for all athletes according to an IOC spokesperson.
The athletes will be very disappointed as they travelled to South Korea in the hope they would be granted the right to compete.
