Mohammed Salah’s presence with his country players did nothing to prevent their loss to Russia in their bout with the host country yesterday.
After thrashing Saudi Arabia Russia returned to beat Egypt 3-1 at St Petersburg stadium.
The Russians took the lead in the 47th-minute through an own goal from Ahmed Fathi, who diverted Roman Zobnin’s shot into his own net.
Denis Cheryshev doubled the lead in the 59th minute for his third goal in the tournament before Artem Dzyuba sealed the victory with a fine individual goal.
Liverpool forward Salah then converted from the penalty spot to give Egypt a consolation goal after he was fouled, but the damage had been done.
Saudi Arabia will face Uruguay later today by 1pm and a victory for the South American side will mean that Egypt will be eliminated from the competition.
