Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez has come to Arsenal’s rescue once again, proving his worth in the new contract he was requesting for in their 2-0 win away at Southampton.
Goals from Sanchez and Giroud gave the Gunners the all-important three points, which saw them leapfrog Manchester United to the fifth position.
Sanchez dummied three defenders to score the first goal and his 20th league goal this season midway to the second half after a fantastic assist from Mesut Ozil, while Aaron Ramsey set up Giroud for a header to score the second goal.
Requiring Sanchez to put speculation over his future to one side in those games, Coach Wenger hailed the Chilean star after a pivotal performance on the south coast.
“That’s Alexis,” Wenger said. “He’s a player who never gives up and is always tricky to stop, he’s very good in short spaces. Once he has the ball in the box, he’s dangerous.
“Alexis always grows during the game. He’s always a slow starter and gets stronger and stronger.”
Sanchez is requesting a 300,000 pounds a week contract and with this kind of performance, the fans would want the board to oblige his request or risk him being snatched up by rival clubs. Plus the FA Cup final is looming.
Arsenal’s next game will be a stern test against Stoke at the Britannia stadium on Saturday.
