In Nigeria, we are free to go to the cinemas with our significant others, however, in Saudi Arabia, for the past 35 years, cinemas have been banned.
However, from next year, Cinemas are expected to return to Saudi Arabia for the first time in 35 years.
The Minister of Culture and Information, Awwad bin Saleh Alawwad said in a statement: “The General Commission for Audiovisual Media has started the process for licensing cinemas in the Kingdom. We expect the first cinemas to open in March 2018. Opening cinemas will act as a catalyst for economic growth and diversification; by developing the broader cultural sector we will create new employment and training opportunities, as well as enriching the Kingdom’s entertainment options.”
Cinemas were banned in the 1980s as they were considered a threat to religious and cultural identity.
To think The Wedding party 2 just premiered with an Arabian Nights theme over the weekend. Talk about right timing!
