Last year, the headlines were agog with tennis champion Serena Williams’ name after her outfit, a black cat suit was banned from the French tennis opening.
Serena had before the opening suffered major health complications after the birth of her daughter and the suit, wakanda- Inspired and designed by Virgil Abloh was built to prevent blood clots, a reccuring health issue from the birthing.
But the French tennis body thought it was out of place and went ahead to ban the suit she’d dedicated to all mothers all over the world.
A year later, the tennis champion is back in Paris with a louder message for all her critics in a new outfit designed by Virgil Abloh for Nike.
The words “Queen,” “Champion,” “Mother,” and “Goddess” were written in both English and French all over the black and white Off-White x Nike jacket she wore for Roland Garros ahead of her match against Russian tennis player Vitalia Diatchenko.
For the actual match, the mom of one whipped off the jacket to reveal a snazzy sports bra and skirt of same design and off course, she won.
Williams first showed off the outfit on social media, in black and white photos of herself dressed in the same jacket and sports bra with a floor-length skirt with the designer Virgil Abloh. “Let the Roland Garros begin,” she wrote. “Here is my French Open look designed by @virgilabloh and @nike.”
