Rio 2016: Late payment delays, Nigeria U23 team at Atlanta
Samson Siasia’s men are stuck at Atlanta but we are not sure why. According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the flight was cancelled because the aircraft was too small. However, a source close to the NFF is saying the flight was cancelled because of late ticket payment by the NFF.
According to the Olympic rule book, players are meant to arrive 36-hours before the Olympics begins but this latest development, means the team will not meet up to that time, though the rescheduled flight will land at Rio by 2pm.
The money having to go through several channel, plus the exchange rate, seems to be the root of the problem and the players are now paying the prize for it.
“The money paid by the [sports] ministry for the charter flight did not hit airline’s account on Tuesday so they refused to fly the team to Brazil,” a source close to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said
“It is a cumbersome exercise but they should have started the process much earlier, which NFF was pointing out. This issue has nothing to do with the NFF,” the source explained.
Nigeria, who won their first football medal in the Olympics, 20-years ago, will now hope to shine, even when conditions are not favorable in Rio 2016.
Wolfsburg kills Draxler’s transfer hopes
An “he said, the club said” situation has developed, after German based first tier club Wolfsburg dismissed claims that they came to an agreement to sell their prized midfielder, Julian Draxler.
Basically, they are saying, they have no intention of selling the midfielder, even though he has his sights set on leaving the club.
The 27-year old, revealed that when he joined Wolfsburg from Schalke ’04 last year, he came to an agreement with the club’s representatives that whenever he wished to leave the club, he will be allowed to leave or if bigger clubs show interest in him, he will be allowed to leave the club but now, Wolfsburg has denied making any arrangement with him and insist he will not be leaving the club anytime soon.
Draxler still has four more years left on his contract, which means he is stuck at the club until 2020, unless by some miracle Wolfsburg change their mind.
“It is absolutely clear that at no time did those responsible at the club make either written nor oral commitments on the transfer of Julian Draxler within the current transfer period,” a statement read.
“VfL Wolfsburg will not be selling Julian Draxler during the course of the current transfer period.

Conte suggests more Chelsea exits
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was delighted about his side’s 3-1 win over Serie A club AC Milan, though his post match conference suggests that more players will be departing from Stanford Bridge before the season commences.
Oscar was outstanding for Chelsea, scoring a double as the Blues won their final international cup match in style.
Speaking after the win, Conte revealed that the match was quite insightful and has led him to decide which players will be kept, sold or loaned.
“I think this match told me a lot about the players who we will keep, and who can go on loan or we can sell,” the Italian said. “Today, it was important because I have a clearer idea than before. Now we go back to London. It’s important for me and for the club to talk and take decisions about all the players and we hope to make the best decision.“
Conte was all praises for Oscar for securing the win for the blues.
“I think Oscar is a good player with a great talent and he can improve a lot. I see a good attitude and a good will in him.”
