Ighalo extends Watford contract
Watford have announced that Super Eagles star Odion Ighalo will be staying with the club until 2012, after he signed a 6-year contract extension.
Ighalo, who was a key figure for Watford, after their promotion to the EPL, had been rumored to be set for a move away from Vicerage road but he has shut all the rumors by deciding to stay with the club.
Watford even turned down a £38m deal from Chinese top flight Shanghai SIPG and had many wondering if he would be leaving the club soon if the right deal came along but now he has confirmed his commitment to the club with his new contract.
Watford will begin their English Premier League campaign against Southampton and hope that Ighalo, who scored 17 goals last season, will replicate the same form.
Mikel promises better performance from Dream Team
Nigeria lost their final group game to Colombia in the early hours of Thursday but team captain Mikel Obi says they didn’t underrate the South American side.
Team coach, Samson Siasia rested 5 of his key players ahead of the quarter-final against Denmark, which lead to their 2-0 loss to the Cafeteros and Mikel says the team will do better.
“That’s football. We are professionals and could not have underrated the Colombians,” Mikel told reporters after the game. “We will work harder ahead of our next game.”
Nigeria will battle it out against Denmark on Saturday and hope to secure a Semi-Final ticket while they are it.
Alex Schwazer handed 8-year ban
2008 Olympic gold medalist for race walk Alex Schwazer has been banned for 8-years, after his doping provisional suspension appeal was rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Spors (CAS).
The gold medalist was suspended by the IAAF in May, after testing positive for a banned substance.
Schwazer, who seems to be a serial offender, also tested positive for a steroid in 2012, just before the Olympic Games in London and was handed a three and a half year ban.
He had played the appeal weeks ago, in the hopes of overturning the ban and featuring at the ongoing games but the CAS, were having none of that and hit him with a lengthy ban instead. See their statement below:
A CAS statement read: “The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed the appeal filed by the Italian race walker Alex Schwazer who challenged the provisional suspension imposed on him by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
“Furthermore, the CAS sanctioned him with an eight-year period of ineligibility starting on the date of today, less any period of provisional suspension effectively served as of 8 July 2016.
“All competitive results obtained by Alex Schwazer from and including 1 January 2016 are disqualified with all resulting consequences, including forfeiture of medals, points and prizes.”
