“Spotlight” is a series that focuses on young Nigerian creatives and the amazing things that they’re doing in their various fields. It was started because we wanted to share their stories and individual journeys on the path to success.

This week,  we’re featuring a young rapper who’s currently killing it out there in the music game, Astro RB.  Astro is a young and really talented rapper who recently released an amazing storytelling song,  ‘Story of cam’. This song went viral and that was how we discovered him.

In his interview, Astr talks about how he started music, how he felt the first time he performed on stage and wrong assumptions that people make about him.

Read his interview below:

Tell us about your music journey? How did it all start?

It all started from a talent show in high school, I spent the entire day writing the most amazing verse just to end up freestyling on stage. Apparently it was the best verse of the night!. They loved it!

The journey has been really exciting. I just watch myself smash all my goals, from massive airplay to being featured on the biggest blogs. The overall Best feeling is driving and hearing your song on the radio,  nothing beats that.

What would you call your style of music?

I can’t give it a specific name because I’m always genre-blending and experimenting to find the best sounds.
As far as inspiration goes, I’ll say I’m majorly inspired by my experiences but lately it has been women. Beautiful women!

What’s your creative process?

The majority of the songs I’ve put out have been freestyles. Since I’m telling my truth in every song it’s not difficult to lay the tracks down. My zone out session  and sana sana were complete freestyles. When I’m not in the mood to make music I just change my creative outlet and I usually find myself working on programming and that’s the biggest flex. I never try to force the music.

Take us through the process of creating your most recent song which went viral on Twitter, ‘Story of Cam’. How did you come up with that?

I live a wild life and I ended up having the craziest experience, what kind of artist would I be if I didn’t make a song about it?  For me to translate the entire experience into a song is the highest level of creativity.

Remember the very first time you performed for a live audience? How was that?

Definitely I think every artist should remember their first time on stage except it was bad and you’re dying to forget. For me, It was an African fashion show in 2016! Best designers in Africa were gathered there!  I hopped on stage and everything went crazy,  the energy from the crowd was mind-blowing! The crowd even sang along!

What’s an assumption that people make about you that isn’t true?

It definitely has to be that I’m proud or I’m a snob.  But hey I guess people always have to find something to say.

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced as a young Nigerian creative?

I would say the challenges have been in the marketing/business side of music. Also, it took a little while to find my audience but good music always speaks for itself.

Who are some young musicians that you admire and would like to collaborate with?

The new kids are going crazy with this music thing and I’m excited about that, but I’ll love to work with Psycho.

What’s the most memorable thing that has happened to you in your music career?

It has to be opening for Mr. Eazi at his ‘Life is Eazi’ tour. It was much more special because he hand-picked me himself.

What are you currently working on?

I’m building myself creatively in music and tech. I am dropping the best mixtape we’ve had in Nigeria in a while, it’s 85% ready!

Are you just solely doing music or do you do anything else on the side?

I own a tech company that’s inventing the future of software products for the world from games to mobile apps. It’s called  ‘Apollo Innovations’.

If you’d like to follow Astro or check out his music, you can find him on  Instagram and Twitter.
