Not sure how we got to this point but going on a solo date can be so nerve racking. Whether it’s eating at a fancy restaurant or going to watch a live band, we usually opt for the company of familiar faces. However, there are so many reasons why we should go on more solo dates.

You can’t be out here claiming to be independent if you are afraid of taking yourself out on dates or being seen hanging out with yourself. Once this life changing practice is adopted, you’ll fall in love with yourself more and discover the joy in your own company.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with constantly relying on the availability or presence of other people because at the end of the day, we are social beings. However, what you do miss out on is time well spent alone. When you always find yourself in the company of others, you make it easy to fall into the trap of neglecting your own wants and enjoyment for that of others.

As unnerving as solo dates appear, you gain more from overcoming this fear than living with it. You could be missing out on some of the best experiences of your life because you are focusing on fears. Is it the fear of looking like a loner in public that’s stopping you? Remember two things. The first is you are unlikely to meet these people again and the second is that it’s all in your head. These people have not left their houses to focus on you.

Gingered? I hope you are because here are seven ways you can date yourself:

  • Dine out

Let’s begin with the solo date that triggers a good number of people. This is the most glaring sign you need to explore that restaurant you’ve been waiting to visit on your own. If you keep waiting for someone to go dine there with, you might never go. So, pick your next available time/day, select a restaurant you’ve never been to and enjoy a table for one dining experience. To ease your way into this habit, find a restaurant with a bar and strike a conversation with the bartender(s).

  • Go to the beach

This solo date is easy to breeze through especially if you pick the right beach for you. You can opt for a beach that has multiple activities or one that simply consists of sand and water. Whatever your choice, give yourself enough time to enjoy the sun and a change of scenery. Take a novel, art supplies, journal or podcast episode with you to get engrossed in.
