If the Headies were an Instagram only event, from my scores, I’d give them a solid A, The 14th Headies Awards had everything an award ceremony was supposed to have, good vibes, beautiful people and absolutely stunning outfits. From my Instagram feed that is.

From a production point of view however, those of us that were lucky or unlucky (depending on how you rate what you watch) to catch the show couldn’t help to shake our heads most times in disbelief at how unprofessional and horrible the production of such a prestigious award went down.

The award was held virtually this year, just like most awards across the globe because of the covid-19 restriction. You’d think it be easier and better contained right? Well, you’re wrong. For some reason it just seems production quality from the show has been falling with each passing year. The execution of the show left much to be desired and for an award ceremony that is 14 years in, it’s time we stop making excuses for the brand.

The show started almost 40 to 50 minutes late, the sound was so bad and worst of all we had to repeatedly be fed with “14th Headies, it’s time to explore’. As if that wasn’t enough, the broadcast on their livestream on Instagram and YouTube totally went off. For an award that big, with that much experience and 14 years in, that was totally unacceptable.

The only thing the award got somewhat right is the winners of the awards and even though we wont all agree on the winners, we can say it was fair.

For the Headies, I personally feel they should go back to the drawing board, a phrase we as Nigerians are all too familiar with. If it means skipping a few editions to get this right, because get it right they must.

We are grateful to have an award that celebrates the music industry and brings lovers of music together but if we must sit through bad sound, technical glitches and terrible production quality, then there’s no point. I don’t know about you but if things don’t change soon enough, the appeal The Headies once had will definitely be a thing of the past.
