The second batch of the Democratic candidates vying for the presidential nomination ticket took the debate stage. This crop of candidates are Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders Pete Buttigieg, Mariam Williamson, Kirsten Gillibrand, Eric Swalwell, Andrew Yang, Michael Bennet and John Hickenloper.

Joe Biden, who was a former senator of the state of Delaware and served as the former Vice President of the United States under Barack Obama, is generally considered as the favourite to win the Democratic presidential nominee ticket.

Polls after Polls have shown that he is likely the only candidate that could beat Donald Trump at the general elections in 2020. All other candidates have been trying to catch up with Joe Biden ever since he launched his Presidential Campaign.

Keeping this in mind, the other candidates came to the debate stage with one foremost goal in mind and that goal was to take down Joe Biden or if not take him down, slow his momentum and the only candidate that has possibly achieved that goal was Kamala Harris. She was phenomenal! She went toe to toe with Joe Biden and came out unscathed.

Now Kamala Harris is a Black Senator representing the State of California, she is also a former persecutor who came very prepared and challenged Joe Biden about statements he made about working with segregationists or his stance on racial issues. She struck the hearts of many as she was able to personalize the racial issue of “busing”. Joe Biden apparently opposed this issue while he was the Senator of Delaware.

She made this remarkable statement

“I also believe, and it is personal, and it was hurtful, to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country to oppose busing. And there was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me.”

Joe Biden really could not recover from that. ”That Little girl was me” resonated and trended on every social media platform, she was simply phenomenal. The effect of this moment has seen a bump in the Polls for Kamala Harris and a drop for Joe Biden, which means that the Ticket for the Democratic Presidential primaries is not guaranteed for any candidate.

As for the other candidates, Pete Buttegieg, The Mayor of South bend from Indiana was also impressive on the night. He was able to address the issue of the killing of a middle aged black man in the South Bend community, this was after he mishandled demonstrations arising from the killing. He has also been accused of alienating the African American community in South Bend Indiana. Reports are that donations to his presidential campaign have increased significantly after the debate

Bernie Sanders on the other hand had a lackluster at the debates, there was really nothing remarkable about him. Bernie Sanders was the presidential candidate that lost the Democratic primary to Hilary Clinton in 2016. There was the expectation that he would be a major contender in the primaries, but so far he has not lived up to the expectations. During the debate, he seemed lost in the candidates’ crowd and was largely overshadowed by Kamala Harris who won the night.

Mariam Williamson, Kirsten Gillibrand, Eric Swalweel, Andrew Yang, Micheal Bennet John, Hickenloper are the one percenters in this crop of candidates. I do not expect to see them at the next set of debate. They have been pretty unremarkable.

It is going to be interesting to see who eventually clinches the democratic presidential ticket, nomination is still months away.

GAME ON!
