It’s been a long time coming for Dremo, the DMW rapper has finally dropped his project under the label. After impressing Davido on his Panda cover, Dremo got signed to DMW in 2016 and two years later we have his debut project, Codename.
Codename Dremo is the debut EP from the rapper and it features label mates Davido, Mayorkun, Peruzzi and Sinzu, Simi also makes an appearance on the EP. In usual fashion, Dremo sticks with the in-house producers and the usual suspects, Speroach Beatz and Fresh DMV.
Dremo is spitter and to the non-rap people reading this, this means that Dremo can really rap. The nine- track EP, proves he can do just that. While the songs on the EP don’t have a cohesive theme, the common factor on the project is Dremo’s ability to rap. Take the introductory track Nobody, Dremo shines on a traditional boom-bap hiphop beat. The beat is laid down perfectly for him to tell the story of his unsigned days to the day he got signed by Davido. Bigger Meat and the Simi assisted Hey Ma are also some gems to look out for.
While the EP’s strong points are Dremo’s rapping ability, the lows, sadly, are what characterises most Nigerian hip-hop projects today and that is the generic afro-pop songs sprinkled all over the project, but somehow he makes it work.
That being said, with Dremo’s rap skills and Davido’s guidance, there definitely is great potential moving forward for an even bigger splash.
