Tina Knowles-Lawson has given us the meaning behind the name Beyoncé. Speaking during Tuesday’s inaugural episode of In My Head with Heather Thomson podcast, Tina said that Beyoncé is actually her maiden name and it is a name that has been used in the family for generations as a surname. ‘”A lot of people don’t know that Beyoncé is my last name, it’s my maiden name,” Tina revealed adding that her full name is Celestine Beyoncé – which is where Tina is derived from.
She also added that it was ‘not a cool thing’ to have that name, “at that time was not a cool thing to have that weird name. I wanted my name to be Linda Smith because those were the cool names.”
In the podcast, Tina explained that her six siblings do not have the same spelling of her maiden name and it was just her and one brother which had the spelling we all know; “I think me and my brother Skip were the only two that had B-E-Y-O-N-C-E,” she said. Other members of the family spell the name Beyincé.”
‘It’s interesting and it shows you the times because we asked my mother when I was grown, “why is my brother’s name spelt B-e-y-i-n-c-e?”… My mum’s reply to me was, “that’s what they put on your birth certificate.”
When Knowles-Lawson asked her mom why she didn’t have the documents corrected, the reply she received was heartbreaking. ‘I said, “Why didn’t you argue and make them correct it?” and she said she did the first time and was told, “Be happy that you’re getting a birth certificate because at one time Black people didn’t get birth certificates… because it meant that you really didn’t exist and you weren’t important.”
“It was that subliminal message and so I understood that must have been horrible for her not to be able to have her children’s names spelled correctly.”
Naming her daughter Beyoncé insured that Knowles-Lawson’s family name will live on.
