Africa, motherland of colorful and beautiful styles and designs has in recent years experienced a whirlwind of burgeoning success in her fashion industry. Africans have been perfecting craftsmanship, innovative design and duality in textile gradually broadening the scope from the traditional construct of Ankara and wax print that the continent has been known for. And this fashion revolution has spread to the shores of Ghana.

The fashion industry within her borders have become more desirable than ever before. Brands are opening small productions or boutiques shops to market and sell their pieces. They hire workers and pay them very fair wages, which automatically reduces unemployment in the country.

And naturally, women are not left out. Ingenious female fashion designers have sprung up creating beautiful pieces that have graced both local and international fashion shows are worn by celebrities all over the world. We’ve put together top five female fashion designers that are putting Ghana on the map in the world of fashion.

Nana & Afua Dabanka

Nana & Afua Dabanka are sisters who have combined their efforts to brand their name. They drew inspirations from their father who used to make handmade traditional leather slippers and beautiful Kente styles mother’s silk.Living in more than 3 different continents and experiencing life from different perspectives are contributed inspiration that have made the creative sisters come up with the sandal line Monaa which is currently in high demand.

Kristin Essel

Kristin Essel

Kristin partnered with Husband Kofi Essel are duo to be reckoned with in the Ghanaian fashion industry. They get their inspirations from architecture and have both created the jewelry brand. They trendy designs have placed them among the best fashion designers in Ghana. La La Anthony, Beyoncé, and Solange have tasted the brand and they have a piece of her designs in the wardrobe.

Abrima Erwiah

Abrima Erwiah

Fronting the movement of ethical fashion is Abrima, a former Bottega Veneta executive who started Studio 189 with her best friend, Rosario Dawson, after a trip with V-Day throughout the continent. The pair produce all their apparel in Ghana made from recycled glass jewelry, batik cotton and indigo-dyed separates.

Aisha Ayensu

Aisha Ayensu

Aisha is a successful designer for her classy and trendy designs. She created the Christie Brown Label with stage costumes pieces. Her designs are showcased across the Africa continent. She is popular for designing one the most famous and international musician, Beyoncé and her dancers’ stage costumes.

Duaba Serwa

Duaba Serwa

The womenswear brand founded by Nelly Hagan-Aboagye.  Initially starting as a jewellery designer, duaba serwa has since developed its trademark of applying jewellery to clothes. duaba serwa mixes textures and volumes into beautifully constructed, stylish and elegant clothing  and has so far been successful participating in international fashion runways like the Mercedes Benz fashion show and Biffi Boutiques Vogue Fashion’s Night Out in Milan.
