A national day of mourning was announced on Saturday in Cameroon by president Paul Biya, after a passenger train fully loaded crashed, killing more than 70 people and leaving over 600 persons injured.

It is reported that the train derailed at around 11 a.m near the station town of Eseka when it was travelling from Capital Yaounde to the port city of Douala.

Persons who witnessed the accident said while passengers were still boarding, rail workers added additional carriages in order to accommodate extra passengers, but it cannot be ascertained if it contributed to the accident.

The president commiserated with families of the dead and instructed that full assistance be given to the survivors. He also stated that investigations will be conducted to find out the true cause of the accident.

We also mourn with Cameroon. May the souls of the dead rest in peace. And we wish the injured persons speedy recovery.
