Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in the second half to take his tally to 18 Champions League goals in 2017 – the most in a calendar year.
Real Madrid didn’t show any sign of their poor form as they destroyed Cypriot club APOEL Nicosia with ease, starting from Luka Modric’s screamer, Benzema’s brace, a goal from defender Nacho and a brace from Ronaldo to seal the rout.
In Seville, Liverpool looked to be coasting into the knockout stage for the first time since 2009 when they went three goals up in the first half with two goals from Roberto Firmino and one from Sadio Mane.
However in the second half, Alberto Moreno was the culprit as he needlessly conceded a free-kick against his former club for Wissam Ben Yedder to make it 3-1.
Moreno then conceded a penalty by clipping Ben Yedder, and the French striker scored after being ordered to retake a successful spot-kick because of encroachment while Pizarro then poked home the third in injury time.
At the Etihad stadium, Manchester City were made to toil for a win as Raheem Sterling struck a late winner to give the EPL leaders a 1-0 win over Feyenoord and extend City’s club-record winning run to 17 matches in all competitions.
