There was a major upset at the US Open yesterday in the men’s event as five-time champion Roger Federer was knocked out in the fourth round by world number 55 John Millman.
The 37-year-old was beaten 3-6 7-5 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3) under three hours 35 minutes in a match that saw him make 77 unforced errors, commit 10 double faults and could only complete 49% of first serves which is the fifth lowest in 393 Grand Slam matches
It was his first defeat in 41 matches at the US Open against a player ranked outside the top 50.
In another match, Novak Djokovic defeated Joao Sousa 6-3 6-4 6-3 to reach the US Open quarter-finals.
His next opponent will be Roger Federer’s conqueror John Millman on Wednesday.
In the women category, Maria Sharapova was beaten 6-4 6-3 by Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro.
Navarro will next face Maddison Keys in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
