Former world No. 1, Garbine Muguruza makes it back to back years winning the Monterrey Open title when Victoria Azarenka retired injured from her first WTA singles final in three years.

Victoria Azarenka’s Injury Hands Monterrey Open Title To Garbine Muguruza

Muguruza winning with a player retiring due to injury is not the way you ever expect it to happen, but Muguruza can walk away feeling accomplished after this one.

She was leading the match between the two former world number ones 6-1, 3-1 when Azarenka decided she was unable to continue because of an injury to her right leg.

“It’s unfortunate I couldn’t give my best today, but I tried my hardest,” a tearful Azarenka, who had not previously reached final since the birth of her first child in December 2016, said at the presentation.

The Spanish-Venezuelan professional tennis player defeated the likes of Elena-Gabriela Ruse, Margarita Gasparyan, Kristina Mladenovic, and Magdaléna Rybáriková prior to her meeting with Vika. She also drops just one set during the entire tournament. She completes a fantastic run of tennis at the 2019 Monterrey Open.

Every title is sweet. The ending was a little strange, [Azarenka] was injured, but it’s a special feeling, winning last year and now this year. I did have tough opponents, this year’s draw was the best… and, well, I played my best tennis,” she said

Muguruza, currently ranked No. 15 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association can take her title win at the Monterrey Open and use it as momentum heading into the lead up to Roland Garros. She did look like she was playing her best tennis these past two weeks and could very well emerge as a top contender on the 2019 WTA Tour.
