What is Zobo? We all know Zobo to be that reddish-brown drink, mostly enjoyed when chilled and shared with family and laughter. We know it to be that special recipe that only mama knows and we have pleasant memories whenever we hear the word ‘zobo’. Did we all actually think zobo was indigenous to Nigeria alone? Well, think again!
What we call zobo is actually pretty common in numerous countries and has many names. It’s called Rosella fruit in Australia, Belchanda in Nepal, Wongo in Gambia, Zoborodo in Northern Nigeria, Bissap in Senegal, Benin, Guinea Mali, Burkina Faso & Ghana. And that’s not even the half of it!
What exactly is zobo? It is actually the dried Hibiscus beverage that is scientifically called hibiscus sabdariffa planted mostly in West Africa. It has a lot of health benefits such as helping with blood regulation and high blood pressure (cos it’s delicious… and an antioxidant!), helps with weight loss, aids nutrition and digestion and most importantly, it’s the absolute best thirst quencher!
