Buhari womenYou know, at first when I learnt that the first lady, Aisha Buhari had stated that she may not support Mr. President’s 2019 rerun for presidency, I felt, “woman, it must be just gist“, until I saw Mr. President’s response on BBC and Washington Post, and I thought to myself, truly, this is NEWS! I have to report.

Well, the crux of the matter is that, the first lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari is not comfortable with the persons in occupation of the president’s cabinet. She says the president does not know 45 out of 50 of his cabinet members for instance.

She believes that the president’s choice of cabinet members is influenced by a few people whom she believes do not share the vision of his party. She refused to mention the names of the persons she refers to.

In an interview granted to BBC hausa correspondent, Mrs. Buhari stated that the president has not told her yet if he will run for presidency in 2019, but if he intends to do so, she may not engage in any rallies in support of his campaign unless he shakes up his cabinet.

According to Premium Times reports, rumours have it that, the president’s cousin Mr. Mamman Daura, who holds no official position, has the most influence on the president to the discomfort of the first lady.

Naziru Makailu, the BBC correspondent who conducted the interview opined that, for the first lady to want to go public with her disapproval, it shows her level of discontentment with the president’s leadership.

THE PRESIDENT RESPONDS

On the other hand, during a joint press briefing with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, President Muhammadu Buhari laughed and responded, stating,

I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room’. ‘So I claim superior knowledge over her and the rest of the opposition, because in the end I have succeeded. Its not easy to satisfy the whole Nigerian opposition parties or to participate in the government‘.

SPOKESPERSON TO THE RESCUE!

Mr. Garba Shehu, spokesperson to president Muhammadu Buhari who came to the rescue of the president in respect of the criticism over Mr. president’s response to the first lady, said on his twitter handle;

‘My friends, can’t a leader get a sense of humour anymore? Mr. president laughed before that statement was made’.

‘He was obviously throwing a banter’.

‘Mr. president respects the place of women in our society. He believes in the abilities of women.’
