The end of the Premier League season is right around the corner, with teams vying for either to avoid relegation or hoping to achieve European qualification to either the Champions League or the Europa League.
Liverpool won the league with games still to play for, so it would come as no surprise to see the list dominated by their players as they all had outstanding seasons, players like Virgil Van Dijk, Alisson, Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander Arnold, all having a shout for the award.
Players from other teams like Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling have performed really well for Manchester City as they came 2nd, although a long way from Liverpool in 1st.
Jamie Vardy has also had an outstanding season for Leicester, firing them into contention for Champions League qualification and he’s also the current highest goal scorer in the league with 23 goals.
Jordan Henderson appears to be the favourite for the award, as he was highly instrumental and also stepping up in defensive midfield during the period number one defensive midfielder, Fabinho was out injured. Coupled with the fact that he started up a players fund raiser Players Together Campaign, to help and provide funds for the health workers who were at the forefront of the battle against the Coronavirus pandemic.
Kevin De Bruyne
Kevin De Bruyne has probably been the best player this season, despite Man City being a long way off from Liverpool in 1st position, De Bruyne proved why he’s regarded as the best midfielder and player in the league and arguably the best midfielder in the world. Last season Salah won the award, despite finishing 2nd in the league behind De Bruyne’s city, with many pundits and fans feeling the midfielder was robbed. So it won’t come as a surprise if De Bruyne wins the award this season.
The last real contender is Sadio Mane. The Senegalese forward proved instrumental in Liverpool’s title winning campaign, chipping in numerous goals and assists, while also having a very impressive work rate and helping out in defense. Many pundits have admitted that without the fast paced forward, Liverpool might not have won the league, but no one knows that for sure.
Regardless of who wins the award, it’s evident the Premier League is blessed with world class players and this can only get better. The likes of Trent Alexander Arnold, Jamie Vardy, Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson are some of the big names who would be vying for the award.
