‘Old Town Road’ originally went viral on TikTok and now has more than 80 million Spotify streams and 700 million views on YouTube till date and is currently the number one song. The trap/country fusion began to garner some buzz due to the track’s viral #yeehaw challenge and countless memes.
How did ‘Old Town Road’ become the number one song in the world? Well, you blame the internet and Billboard for that. ‘Old Town Road’ was already a hit and was getting close to the number one spot till Billboard removed the record from their Country Music charts because according to them, the track “does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music.” and has ‘nothing to do with the race of the artist’ (yeah right Billboard). The song’s removal from Billboard’s the country charts turned into a big debate with country music heavyweight Billy Ray Cyrus throwing his weight behind the song.
‘I was thinking, what’s not country about it? What’s the rudimentary element of a country and western song? Then I thought, it’s honest, humble, and has an infectious hook, and a banjo. What the hell more do ya need?‘
Not only did Billy Ray throw his weight behind the song, he also jumped on the official remix which has made it to Number 1.
It was so obvious to me after hearing the song just one time. I was thinking, what’s not country about it? What’s the rudimentary element of a country and western song? Then I thought, it’s honest, humble, and has an infectious hook, and a banjo. What the hell more do ya need?
