Serena defeated Bulgarian qualifier Viktoriya Tomova in straight sets 6-1 6-4 in her second major tournament since giving birth to daughter Olympian.
Venus on her part had to fight back after going down by one set to beat Romanian qualifier Alexandra Dulgheru 4-6 6-0 6-1.
Serena next faces Tatjana Maria or Kristina Mladenovic who will play today while Venus plays Kiki Bertens.
