Today’s woman crush is no other person than the beautiful, elegant and powerful ‘Mama Africa’ Yemi Alade. Born in March 1989 in Abia state to a Yoruba dad and an Igbo mum, the award-winning singer was raised in Lagos and bagged a first degree in Geography in University of Lagos.
She made her first musical break after winning the Peak Talent Show back in 2009 and later released her first single titled “Fimisile”. Prior to making it to the limelight, Yemi was a member in an all-girl band called Noty Spices.
This talented singer has been featured on the covers of several magazines and released songs and albums titled King of Queens and Mama Africa that have charted billboards across many African countries. Her fame has led her to share a stage with popular international and local acts like Mary J Blige, Lace, Wizkid, Yemi Sax, M.I, Waje and others.
Yemi is slated to perform on the on the upcoming MTV MAMAs happening this weekend in Johannesburg alongside Casper Nyovest, Ycee, Alikaba. She has lend her voice to many philanthropic projects and awareness projects like UNESCO 2014 World Book Capital encourage young people to stay in school and read books and ONE, a campaign for the empowerment of women around the world. Our very own Mama Africa was part of the project called ‘Best Day of My Life #makethefuture’ where six global stars including Jennifer Hudson, Pixie Lott, Steve Aoki, Tan Wei Wei and Luan Santana, teamed up on a new campaign song. It premiered worldwide live on Facebook on September 28, 2016. We are certain Africa and the world at large is so proud of you Yemi. Keep doing great and mighty things.
